Company Founded
In a year of unprecedented American historical events, in the small town of Berlin, New Jersey, United Asphalt Company was founded by Joseph Umosella. With humble beginnings, our first asphalt filling plant was housed in a small chicken coop behind our then plant office, a small, residential house.
Commitment to the Working Class
During our first 60 years, we are proud to say that the large majority of our employees have stayed on board for lengthy, rewarding careers, company-wide.
On February 13, 1967, The Courier Post highlighted our cooperation with the Department of Labor's On the Job Training (OJT) Program. The article cited "its aim to place persons in jobs for which they are qualified." Then Project Director, John F. Schultz explained that the program's goal was to "bring out the best in trainees," those of whom could include aged, welfare recipients, unemployed, underemployed, school dropouts, high school and college graduates, parolees and people forced to work for the first time 'due to circumstances beyond their control.'"
A Second Generation Takes Over
Mark Umosella, Sr., Joseph's son, takes over the reigns of United Asphalt Company, with plans for a bright future.
Purchased Miracle Mop Co.
United Asphalt is always on the lookout for ways to innovate, expand and offer our customers added value. In 1990, we acquired Miracle Mop from Westmont, NJ, a cotton mop hank product used to apply hot and cold applied asphalt roofing products. With this acquistion and new offering, we were able to add value as a source of both the asphalt products and a more convenient way to apply them.
Introduced Bulk Asphalt Tolling & Purchased Current Location
Continuing in our efforts to expand as a company as well as our product offering, 1991 saw two major events: 1. we purchased our first tractor and tanker to toll bulk asphalt and 2. Mark had scouted the local landscape and found and then envisioned our current property, 237 North Grove Street as a favorable plot to relocate and grow the business. He purchased the 17 Acre lot we currently operate on.
Plant Relocation & Expansion
Under the second-generation leadership of Mark Umosella Sr., United Asphalt's ambitions were bright and expansion was eminent. In 1994, we built our 9600 square foot warehouse and office at our current address on Grove Street.
Acquisition of Cant Corp
Again seeing an excellent potential in the addition of offering Tapered Insulation products to assist roofing contractors and architects, United Asphalt acquired Cants Manufacturing Corp. in Lakewood, NJ. Under our United Tapered Division, we now manufacture tapered insulation products to ease sharp transistions from roof surfaces to parapet walls and to properly redirect water from ponding on roof surfaces.
Begin Manufacturing Aluminum Roof Coatings
Seeing the value and benefits of offering our customers reflective roof coatings to help lower the effects of harmful UV rays on a rooftop, we configured our facility and began to incorporate the necessary workflows to manfacture aluminum roof coatings.
Introduction of Elastomeric Roof Coatings Systems
After decades of manufacturing asphalt-based roof cements and coatings and with the general evolution of the commercial roofing industry, United Asphalt introduced our premium line of elastomeric roof restoration coating systems, Armour Proof Coatings.
The Next Generation of United Asphalt Company
After nearly four decades, Mark Umosella, Sr. passed the baton over to his sons, Stephen, James & Mark, Jr. The three brothers, who had already been working in various capacities of the family business for years, were positioned throughout the business with insights into how to maintain, grow and efficiently advance the company.
