Product Application

What types of roofs can be coated?

Roof coatings can be applied to a variety of roof surfaces, including asphalt-based (BUR, modified), metal, single-ply membranes (EPDM, Hypalon, TPO, PVC). Be sure to use confirm the product's applicable surfaces on its product page or data sheet or contact your local rep prior to purchasing for your project.

Can I alter roof cements & coatings with thinner?

All of United Asphalt products are modified during the manufacturing process for the change of seasons. Therefore, any alterations after the manufacturing process can cause product failure and shorten lifespan. Thinning out any solvent based product is in a direct violation of federal laws and regulations.

Can roof coatings or primers be applied if rain is forecasted?

A roof coating or primer should not be applied to any surface with a threat of rain within 24 hours.

After it rains, how long do I have to wait before applying roof coating or primer?

A roof surface must be fully dry before applying any roof coating or primer. The recommended wait time is 24 to 48 hours. Morning dew should also be allowed to dry before application even if it hasn't rained recently.

Will ponding water affect aluminum coating?

Aluminum coating will not perform well in ponding areas due to the accumulation of water, dirt, & debris. This prevents the reflectance of the coating and will work its way under the coating causing delamination from the roof surface.

Do I need to prime?

Can United Asphalt products be used on single-ply roof systems (EPDM, PVC, TPO)?

United Asphalt Company offers various products that will adhere to single-ply systems. Never use an asphalt based product to any of these systems. Please contact your United Asphalt sales representative for the proper application for your single-ply roof.

When would I use an aluminum coating product?

Aluminum roof coatings are asphalt-based coatings that form, durable protective metallic shields that extends the life of asphalt and metal roof surfaces by reflecting harmful UV rays from the sun. In some cases an aluminum roof coating may also yield a cost savings due to lower energy costs of the building, however aluminum roof coatings are designed to be applied over a watertight roof and are not intended to provide any type of waterproofing.
